As described in Skanda Purana, this entire region (Garhwal) was famous by the name of Kedarkhand in the past.  According to Skanda Purana, the name of this area is Kubjamrak because here Lord Vishnu had seen the sage Ragbhu under the mango tree.  After the sage Rishi selected the place for his long penance (tapasya or penance), Lord Vishnu appeared to the sage in the form of "Hrishikesh", impressed by his work.  This word is made up of two words Hrishik and Esh.  Hrishi means senses and Esh means God or Lord.  Its meaning is god of senses.  The Purana states thus: "Sage Rabhya liked the purity and naturalness of the place where Lord Vishnu appeared, so he resided there in the form of Vaidya, his mentor, who looked like hair.  But considering Rabhya Rishi and its divine qualities, the region is popularly known as Rishi Kesha or Rishikesh, or the hair of a Rishi (sage). Skanda Purana mentions that Lord Vishnu blessed Rabhya Rishi and  He was given this divine message: "When you will have established that place as Hrishikesh (Lord Hrishikesh, the lord of all the senses), by controlling your senses of supreme penance."
This place mentions the place where Lord Vishnu defeated the powerful demon Madhu.  According to Ramayana, Lord Rama had killed the powerful demon Ravana for performing rigorous penance.  Lakshman (brother of Lord Rama) crossed the river on a jute bridge, known as Lakshman Jhula.  In 1889, the jute bridge was replaced by an iron drop bridge.  The bridge was damaged due to floods in 1924, after which the bridge was replaced by a new bridge.
